Lo Loestrin Fe 28 day Indication

Lo Loestrin Fe 28 day is a Birth Control Pill that consists of 24 hormone pills, and 4 non-hormonal iron supplement pills. Lo Loestrin Fe 28 day contains a lower dose of estrogenic hormones than most birth control pills. It prevents pregnancy by providing hormones that control ovulation, and other related changes in the body that occur in preparation for a pregnancy. Loestrin 24 Fe contains only 4 non-hormonal pills per package as opposed to 7 in regular packages of birth control. This means that on Loestrin 24 Fe, menstrual periods are shorter, and bleeding is much lighter. Studies have found that low-dose birth control pills are much safer than higher-dose pills. With low-dose pills, there are fewer, less severe side effects.

Precautions

1. When you first start using this birth control, make sure you use back-up contraception such as condoms or a spermicide.
2. Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following:
   • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
   • If you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement.
   • If you have high blood pressure or a history of heart disease.
   • If you have high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, or diabetes.
   • If you have migraine headaches or a history of depression.
   • If you have a history of breast cancer or an abnormal mammogram.

Warnings

Taking hormones such as birth control will increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, especially if you smoke and are older than 35 years old.

Patient Family Information

• When you first start using this birth control, make sure you use back-up contraception such as condoms or a spermicide.
• Begin taking the pills on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period starts.
• During the first 3 months of being on the pill, you may experience some breakthrough bleeding.
• Let your doctor know if it continues or becomes very heavy.
• Take one pill every day and make sure it is no more than 24 hours apart.
• The pill can be chewed or swallowed whole.
• If you would like to chew the pill, drink a full glass of water after the pill is swallowed.
• Before you are at the end of the pack, be sure you fill your prescription for the next pack before you run out of pills of your current pack.
• If you miss any pills during a pack, you may get pregnant.

Contraindication

• Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, have recently had a baby, or are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications.
• In addition, do not take this medication if you have a history of stroke or blood clot, circulation problems, a hormone related cancer such as breast or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, or a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills.

Severe Side Effects of Lo Loestrin Fe 28 day Indication

Severe side effects include:

• Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
• Sudden headache
• Confusion
• Pain behind the eyes
• Problems with vision, speech, or balance
• Chest pain or heavy feeling
• Pain spreading to the arm or shoulder
• Nausea
• Sweating

Common side effects include:

• Mild nausea
• Vomiting
• Bloating
• Stomach cramps
• Breast pain, tenderness, or swelling
• Freckles or darkening of facial skin
• Increased hair growth
• Loss of scalp hair
• Changes in weight or appetite
• Problems with contact lenses
• Vaginal itching
