What is Synthroid (Levothyroxine Sodium)?

Synthroid (Levothyroxine Sodium) is a prescription medication that helps treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). It works by producing more thyroid hormones that the thyroid doesn’t release enough. This helps to regulate the body’s metabolism, which is responsible for transforming the food we take into our bodies for energy. This is important for maintaining vital functions in our body, and the development of the children. Synthroid can also be prescribed as a daily thyroid hormone replacement pill for patients who need surgery and radioiodine therapy for managing Well – Differentiated Thyroid Cancer (WDTC). Not only does this avoid hypothyroidism, but it also prevents the growth or recurrence of thyroid cancer.
