About Pentasa (mesalamine)
Uses and Benefits of Pentasa (mesalamine)
Pentasa (mesalamine) is indicated for the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease in adults. It can also be used long-term to help maintain remission and prevent flare-ups in both conditions.
Ingredients in Pentasa (mesalamine)
The active ingredient in Pentasa is mesalazine, also known as mesalamine, 5-ASA, or 5-aminosalicylic acid. Inactive ingredients include ethylcellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and talc.
The tablets do not contain gluten, lactose, or phthalates.
How to Take Pentasa (mesalamine)?
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully when taking the medication.
Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water. Do not chew, break, or crush the tablets. It is recommended to take the medication with meals.
The usual dose for adults is as follows: Ulcerative Colitis: 500 mg four times a day (2 g daily). Your doctor may increase the dose to 1 g four times a day (4 g daily) if needed.
Crohn’s Disease: 1 g four times a day (4 g daily). For patients in remission, a dose of 3 g daily in divided doses is recommended.
If you think you have taken too much of the medication, contact a healthcare professional, hospital emergency department, or regional poison control center immediately, even if you have no symptoms.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
