About Emla Patch
Uses and Benefits of Emla Patch
Emla Patch is indicated for temporarily numbing small areas of healthy, unbroken skin. It is used to create a loss of feeling or numbness, slightly larger than a two-dollar coin. The patch is commonly applied before procedures such as needle insertions or blood draws.
It can also be used before vaccinations, specifically for the following vaccines: MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella), DPTP (Diphtheria-Pertussis-Tetanus-Poliovirus), Haemophilus influenzae b, and Hepatitis B. However, since the effect of Emla on the immune response to other vaccines is not known, it is not recommended for use with any vaccine other than those listed above.
Ingredients in Emla Patch
The active ingredients in Emla Patch are 2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% prilocaine. Inactive ingredients include carboxypolymethylene, polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil, sodium hydroxide, and acrylate adhesive. The patch also contains a tan-colored adhesive tape with a white pad in the center, which holds the Emla. The tape is protected by a peel-off backing that is removed before applying the patch. The patch does not contain latex.
How to Use Emla Patch?
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
Clean and dry the area where you will apply the patch. Apply the patch 1 hour before your procedure as directed by your healthcare provider. Press firmly around the edges to ensure a good seal, then gently press the center of the patch. Mark the application time on the patch.
After use, remove the patch and clean the area before your procedure. Wash your hands thoroughly unless you are treating them. Do not apply the patch to broken skin, wounds, rashes, or mucous membranes. Avoid using the patch near your eyes or ears. Do not touch the white medicated center of the patch.
Don’t leave the patch on for longer than instructed. Do not reuse the patch. Keep the patch out of a child’s reach to prevent accidental swallowing. You may consider using a second covering if necessary.
Who Should Not Use Emla Patch?
Avoid using Emla Patch if you or your child has methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder. It should not be used on infants who are 12 months old or younger and require methemoglobin-inducing agents, such as sulfonamides. Also, avoid using Emla Patch if you are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, any other “caine” type anesthetics, or any of the non-medicinal ingredients in the product (see the ‘What the Nonmedicinal Ingredients Are’ section).
This patch should not be used on infants younger than 3 months of age unless instructed by your doctor. Avoid using Emla Patch for procedures that require large amounts of the product over large body areas if they are not conducted in a hospital setting.
