About Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized)

Uses and Benefits of Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized)

Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized) is indicated as an adjunct to diet for reducing elevated LDL-C, total cholesterol (Total-C), triglycerides (TG), and Apo B, while increasing HDL-C in adult patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia. It is also used to treat severe hypertriglyceridemia in adult patients.

Limitations of Use Fenofibrate has not been shown to reduce coronary heart disease morbidity or mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Ingredients in Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized)

The active ingredient in Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized) is fenofibrate. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, lactose monohydrate, lecithin, microcrystalline cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium stearyl fumarate, talc, titanium dioxide, and xanthan gum.

In addition, the 54 mg individual tablets contain D&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Yellow No. 6, and FD&C Blue No. 2.

How to Take Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized)?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized) should be taken with meals.

For primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, the initial dose is 160 mg once daily. For severe hypertriglyceridemia, the initial dose can range from 54 mg to 160 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 160 mg. For patients with renal impairment, the initial dose is 54 mg once daily. For geriatric patients, the dose should be selected based on renal function.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. In case of an overdose, contact your healthcare provider or Poison Control immediately.

Who Should Not Take Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized)?

Do not take Tricor (Fenofibrate Micronized) if you have severe renal dysfunction, including if you are on dialysis. Do not use it if you have active liver disease or gallbladder disease. Do not take Tricor if you are allergic to fenofibrate or any other ingredient in the medication. It should also not be used by nursing mothers.

Safety Precautions

Before you take Tricor, tell your healthcare provider if you have myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, or a history of muscle problems. The risk of these conditions increases when Tricor is taken with a statin, especially in elderly patients or those with diabetes, renal failure, or hypothyroidism.

Tricor may increase liver enzymes, so liver tests, including ALT, should be monitored periodically. It can also increase serum creatinine levels, so renal function should be checked in patients with renal impairment.

If you have gallbladder problems, be aware that Tricor may increase the risk of cholelithiasis (gallstones). If gallstones are suspected, gallbladder studies may be necessary.

Use caution when taking Tricor with oral coumarin anticoagulants. Adjust the anticoagulant dose to maintain the proper prothrombin time/INR to prevent bleeding.

Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported with Tricor. Discontinue the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment if these reactions occur.

Storage Guidelines

Store Fenofibrate at room temperature, between 25°C (77°F). Short-term exposure between 15°C (59°F) and 30°C (86°F) is acceptable. Keep the medication away from moisture and out of the reach of children to ensure safety.
