Ciloxan Eye Ointment (ciprofloxacin) is indicated for treating bacterial infections of the following infections of the eye and its adnexa when caused by susceptible strains of the designated bacteria.
For corneal ulcers, Ciloxan Eye Ointment is used to treat infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
For conjunctivitis, it is effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus (Viridans group), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.
The safety and effectiveness of Ciloxan Eye Ointment in children under one year of age have not been established.
Ingredients in Ciloxan Eye Ointment
The active ingredient in Ciloxan Eye Ointment is ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, providing 3.5 mg per gram, which is equivalent to 3 mg of ciprofloxacin base. Inactive ingredients include white petrolatum and mineral oil.
How to Use Ciloxan Eye Ointment?
Follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.
For conjunctivitis in adults and children over 1 year of age, apply a 1/2-inch ribbon of Ciloxan Eye Ointment into the conjunctival sac three times a day for the first two days. Then, apply a 1/2-inch ribbon twice a day for the next five days.
For corneal ulcers in adults and children over 12 years of age, apply a 1/2-inch ribbon into the conjunctival sac every 1 to 2 hours for the first two days. After that, apply a 1/2-inch ribbon every 4 hours for up to 12 days. If healing has not occurred after 12 days, your doctor will decide whether to continue the treatment.
Always avoid contaminating the dispensing tip to maintain the ointment’s effectiveness.
Who Should Not Use Ciloxan Eye Ointment?
