About Xylocaine Ointment (Lidocaine)
Uses and Benefits of Xylocaine Ointment (Lidocaine)
Xylocaine Ointment (lidocaine) is indicated for the temporary numbing of the skin in both adults and children aged 2 years and older. This medication can be used before certain medical procedures. It also helps relieve pain caused by minor skin injuries, such as abrasions, sunburns, minor burns, insect bites, and hemorrhoids.
Ingredients in Xylocaine Ointment (Lidocaine)
The active ingredient in Xylocaine Ointment is 5% lidocaine, which provides temporary numbing of the skin. Inactive ingredients include polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and purified water.
How to Use Xylocaine Ointment (Lidocaine)?
Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.
If your doctor recommends this medicine, follow their directions. If you are treating yourself, follow these directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
Xylocaine Ointment 5% comes in a 35-gram tube. It has a protective seal. If the seal is broken, exchange it for a new tube. To break the seal, press the pointed cap end into the seal. Do this the first time you use it.
These guidelines are for healthy people only. If you have a skin condition, ask your doctor. Ask them about the maximum amount to use.
Do not use more ointment than your doctor orders. Avoid using it very often. Do not use it for longer. Doing so may cause side effects. See the “Serious Side Effects” section.
Clean the affected area well before each use, if possible.
Use the smallest amount to control symptoms.
Apply a thin layer. Only use enough to cover the area. Reapply only when you need it.
For broken or burned skin, avoid touching the area. Apply the ointment to a sterile gauze pad. Secure the gauze pad over the area.
If used on sore nipples, clean the nipple area completely before each feeding. This ensures the baby does not take in any medicine.
Avoid contact with your eyes.
Dose adjustments may be needed for: Elderly patients, acutely ill patients, and patients with liver disease. Patients with severe kidney disease may need adjustments. Patients using other anesthetics or certain antiarrhythmics may also need adjustments. These drugs include amiodarone or mexiletine.
Dose for Adults: Use no more than 10 grams for a single application. Wait at least 8 hours between doses. The total dose in 24 hours should be no more than 20 grams.
Dose for Children 2-12 Years Old: The dose depends on the child’s weight. Use no more than 1 gram per 10 kilograms of the child’s weight. Wait at least 8 hours between doses.
For children under 2 years old, ask a doctor.
Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about measuring doses.
10 grams from the 35-gram tube is about 1/3 of the tube.
If the effect of Xylocaine Ointment 5% seems too strong or too weak, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
The ointment washes off easily with water. You can remove it from skin and clothing.
If your condition does not improve in 3-5 days, ask your doctor about continuing use.
Overdose: Early signs are numbness around the mouth, lightheadedness, and dizziness. Blurred vision may occur. In a serious overdose, trembling, seizures, or unconsciousness may occur. If you notice these signs and stop using the ointment, the risk of serious side effects decreases. If you think someone is experiencing these signs, call your doctor or go to the hospital right away.
Who Should Not Use Xylocaine Ointment (Lidocaine)?
Do not use Xylocaine Ointment if you are allergic to lidocaine, other “-caine” anesthetics, or any of the ingredients in the ointment. Refer to the ‘What the important nonmedicinal ingredients are’ section for more information about allergens.
