About Xadago

Uses and Benefits of Xadago

Xadago is prescribed alongside levodopa and carbidopa to treat adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who experience “off” episodes. It works by inhibiting the monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) enzyme, specifically to reduce “off” episodes in PD. It is not known if Xadago is effective in treating PD when taken as a single medicine (monotherapy). Additionally, it is not known if Xadago is safe and effective for children.

Ingredients in Xadago

The active ingredient in Xadago is safinamide mesylate. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol 6000, iron oxide (red), potassium aluminum silicate, and titanium dioxide.

How to Take Xadago?

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions exactly.

Take Xadago at the same time each day, with or without food. Your healthcare provider may adjust your dose to find the right amount for you.

If you miss a dose, take it at the same time the next day. Do not start or stop taking Xadago without consulting your healthcare provider.

In case of overdose, immediately contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Who Should Not Take Xadago?

Do not take Xadago if you take a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) or have taken one within the past 14 days. This may cause a sudden increase in blood pressure. Do not take Xadago if you take opioid drugs, St. John’s wort, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants, tetracyclic antidepressants, triazolopyridine antidepressants, cyclobenzaprine, methylphenidate, amphetamines, or similar drugs. This can be life-threatening. Do not take XADAGO within 14 days after you stop taking any of these medicines.

Avoid taking Xadago with dextromethorphan, a cough or cold medicine, as it may cause psychosis or abnormal behavior. Do not take Xadago if you have a history of an allergic reaction to safinamide. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include swelling of your tongue, mouth, or difficulty breathing. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if you have had an allergic reaction to safinamide in the past. Do not take Xadago if you have severe liver problems.
