About Vascepa

Uses and Benefits of Vascepa

Vascepa is indicated along with certain medicines (statins) to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart-related hospitalizations in adults with cardiovascular disease or diabetes with two or more additional risk factors for heart disease. It is also used with a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet to lower high triglyceride levels in adults.

It is not known if Vascepa changes your risk of having inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis). Its safety and effectiveness in children are unknown.

Ingredients in Vascepa

The active ingredient in Vascepa is icosapent ethyl. Inactive ingredients include tocopherol, gelatin, glycerin, maltitol, sorbitol, and purified water.

How to Take Vascepa?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Take it as directed and do not change your dose without medical advice. Do not take more capsules than what is prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole—do not break, crush, dissolve, or chew them.

If prescribed the 0.5-gram capsules, do not take more than 8 per day with food. If prescribed the 1-gram capsules, do not take more than 4 per day with food.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you miss a full day, do not double your dose.

Your doctor may start you on a diet that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, and low in added sugars before giving you Vascepa. Continue following this diet while taking the medication. Your doctor may also monitor your triglyceride and lipid levels with blood tests.

Who Should Not Take Vascepa?

Do not take it if you are allergic to icosapent ethyl or any of its ingredients. Refer to the “Ingredients in Vascepa” section for a complete list of ingredients.
