About Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)
Uses and Benefits of Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)
Truvada (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is indicated for two uses. It treats HIV-1 infection when combined with other HIV-1 medicines in adults and children weighing at least 37 pounds (17 kg). It is also used for HIV-1 pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to lower the risk of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents weighing at least 77 pounds (35 kg). HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS.
The safety and effectiveness of Truvada for HIV-1 treatment in children under 37 pounds (17 kg) are unknown. It is also unknown if Truvada is safe and effective for PrEP in individuals under 77 pounds (35 kg).
Ingredients in Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)
The active ingredients in Truvada are emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.
Inactive ingredients include croscarmellose sodium, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and pregelatinized starch. The 200 mg/300 mg tablets have a coating called Opadry II Blue Y-30-10701, which contains FD&C Blue #2 aluminum lake, hypromellose 2910, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, and triacetin. The 167 mg/250 mg, 133 mg/200 mg, and 100 mg/150 mg tablets are coated with Opadry II Blue, which contains the same ingredients.
How to Take Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)?
Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.
Take Truvada once daily, with or without food. If you take Truvada for HIV-1 treatment, you must use it with other HIV-1 medicines. Your doctor will tell you which medicines to take and how to take them.
Children take a lower-strength Truvada tablet than adults. They should swallow the tablet whole. If your child cannot swallow the tablet, tell your doctor. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your child’s weight.
Do not change your dose or stop taking Truvada without talking to your doctor. Stay under medical care while using Truvada. Do not skip doses.
If you take too much Truvada, call your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Refill your prescription before you run out. Stopping Truvada for HIV-1 treatment, even briefly, may increase the virus in your blood and make it harder to treat. If you take Truvada for PrEP, missing doses raises your risk of HIV-1 infection.
Who Should Not Take Truvada (Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate)?
Do not take Truvada for PrEP if you have HIV-1. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need additional medicines to treat the infection. Truvada alone is not a complete treatment. Do not take Truvada for PrEP if you do not know your HIV-1 status. You may already have HIV-1 and need other medicines to treat it.
Truvada only helps reduce the risk of HIV-1 infection before exposure. It does not treat existing HIV-1 infection.
