About Salofalk
Uses and Benefits of Salofalk
Salofalk are indicated for the treatment of acute ulcerative colitis, a condition where the lining of the large bowel and rectum becomes inflamed. This medication also helps prevent relapses of Crohn’s disease in patients who have had bowel resection.
Ingredients in Salofalk
The active ingredient in Salofalk Tablets is 500 mg of mesalazine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid, 5-ASA, or mesalazine). Inactive ingredients include carnauba wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, glycine, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, microcrystalline cellulose, polydimethyl siloxane, polysorbate, povidone, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, talc, titanium dioxide, and triethyl citrate. Salofalk Tablets are gluten-free and phthalate-free.
How to Take Salofalk?
Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly. For acute ulcerative colitis, take two 500 mg Salofalk three or four times daily. For preventing Crohn’s disease recurrence after bowel surgery, take 3 g per day in divided doses. Take Salofalk whole with liquid before meals. Do not crush the tablets. Consistency in taking your medication ensures treatment success. Avoid stopping the medication abruptly unless directed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at once. In case of an overdose, contact your doctor, a hospital emergency department, or a Poison Control Center immediately, even if you do not have symptoms.
Who Should Not Take Salofalk?
Do not take Salofalk if you have severe kidney impairment (GFR <30 ml/min/1.73m²) or severe liver impairment. Avoid this medication if you are allergic to mesalazine or any ingredients listed in the ‘Ingredients section”. Do not take Salofalk if you have stomach or small intestinal ulcers, urinary tract obstructions, or sensitivity to salicylates, including acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin). Safety Precautions for Salofalk
Before you take Salofalk , tell your healthcare provider if you have liver disease or a history of increased liver enzymes, as mesalazine may affect liver function. If you have mild to moderate liver function impairment, your doctor will need to determine if it’s safe for you to use this medication. Inform your healthcare provider if you have had unusual or allergic reactions to mesalazine, sulfasalazine, or salicylates like Aspirin.
Additionally, let your doctor know if you have liver or kidney disease, or higher-than-normal blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. If you have bleeding or clotting disorders or pyloric stenosis, as it may delay the tablet from reaching your colon, discuss this with your healthcare provider.
You should also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as mesalazine passes into breast milk.
While using Salofalk , stop taking them immediately if you notice a rash or fever. Your doctor may monitor your blood and urine regularly to check your kidney function, as long-term use of Salofalk may damage your kidneys.
Be aware that kidney stones may develop while taking mesalazine. Symptoms include blood in your urine, frequent urination, and pain in your back, side, belly, or groin. Drink plenty of liquids as advised by your doctor to help prevent kidney stones.
