Take Lotensin HCT orally, with or without food, usually once a day. To get the best results, take it at the same time each day. Drink enough fluids to stay hydrated. If your fluid intake is limited, ask your doctor for specific advice.

- Do not take Lotensin HCT if you are allergic to benazepril, hydrochlorothiazide, or any other ingredients in the medication. Consult your pharmacist for a full list of ingredients.
- Do not take it if you are allergic to sulfonamide (sulfa drug) and (sulfa drug) and other medicines known as an ACE inhibitor. Do not use Lotensin HCT if you have a history of angioedema, a rare reaction causing swelling in the lips, face, tongue, or throat. This reaction may occur from any cause, including medicines. Do not take Lotensin HCT if you produce very little or no urine, a condition known as anuria.
- Do not use Lotensin HCT if you are taking certain other medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.
Side Effects of Lotensin HCT (Benazepril and Hydrochlorothiazide)
Common side effects include cough, dizziness, excessive tiredness, and drowsiness. These side effects are usually not serious and do not require medical attention.
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects, such as swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing; rash; lightheadedness; fainting; fever, sore throat, chills, or other signs of infection; yellowing of the skin or eyes; dry mouth; thirst; weakness; lack of energy; restlessness; muscle pains or cramps; or infrequent urination.

Before you take Lotensin HCT, tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions: heart problems, liver problems, high uric acid levels (gout), kidney problems, persistent or severe diarrhea or vomiting, or abnormal electrolyte levels (including potassium, sodium, or magnesium). You should also inform them if you have high calcium levels, abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmias), diabetes, lupus, or prostate problems.
If you have a sulfa allergy, tell your healthcare provider, as some people with a sulfa allergy may also be allergic to Lotensin HCT benazepril/hydrochlorothiazide. A sulfa allergy can cause a rash or more severe reactions to sulfonamide medicines such as sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, silver, or sulfasalazine.
Lotensin HCT Benazepril/hydrochlorothiazide can cause serious harm to an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking this medication immediately and contact your healthcare provider.
Lotensin HCT passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you whether to stop breastfeeding or discontinue the medication.
