About Livial (Tibolone)

Uses and Benefits of Livial (Tibolone)

Livial is indicated for women with a uterus to relieve menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal dryness. It is not a hormone itself; it works by mimicking the effects of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in certain parts of the body, helping to manage these common symptoms of menopause.

Ingredients in Livial (Tibolone)

The active ingredient in Livial is 2.5 mg of tibolone. Inactive ingredients include potato starch, lactose, ascorbyl palmitate, and magnesium stearate.

How to Take Livial (Tibolone)?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

You should also read the instructions before taking your medicine. If you are not sure how to take Livial, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take one Livial tablet daily, at the same time each day. Swallow the tablet with water or another non-alcoholic drink.

The Livial pack contains 28 white tablets. The strips are marked with the days of the week. Start with the tablet marked for that day. For example, if it is Monday, take the tablet marked with Monday, and continue taking one tablet each day until the strip is empty. Start a new strip the following day without a break between strips or packs.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary. Your doctor will advise you on how long you need to take Livial.

If you forget to take a tablet, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is more than 12 hours late. If it’s more than 12 hours late, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If you have taken more tablets than prescribed, immediately contact your doctor or call the National Poisons Centre at 0800 764 766 for advice. Signs of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding after a few days.

Who Should Not Take Livial (Tibolone)?

Do take Livial if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. You should also avoid it if you have or have ever had breast cancer, or if you are suspected of having it. Do not take Livial if you have cancer that is sensitive to estrogen, such as cancer of the womb lining (endometrium), or if you are suspected of having it.

Livial should not be taken if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding or untreated excessive thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia). Additionally, if you have or have ever had a blood clot in a vein, such as deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, you should not take Livial. It is also contraindicated if you have a blood-clotting disorder, such as protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency, or if you have had or currently have diseases caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke, or angina.

Do not take Livial if you have or have recently had liver disease with abnormal liver function tests. Livial is also not recommended for individuals with a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria. Lastly, you should not use Livial if you are allergic to tibolone or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Safety Precautions for Livial (Tibolone)

Before you take Livial, tell your healthcare provider if you have any allergies, including allergies to inactive ingredients in this medication. Also, inform your doctor about your medical history, particularly if you have vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, diabetes, cancer, blood clots, blood clotting disorders, or a family or personal history of angioedema. You should also mention if you have gallbladder disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol/triglycerides, kidney or liver disease, lupus, mental/mood disorders, migraines, underactive thyroid, mineral imbalances, obesity, hormone problems, uterus issues, asthma, seizures, stroke, or porphyria.

Avoid smoking or using tobacco, as it increases the risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attack, especially in women over 35. Inform your doctor if you have had or plan to have surgery or will be immobile for a long period, as these conditions increase the risk of blood clots while taking Livial. Your doctor may recommend temporary discontinuation or special precautions in such cases.

This medication may cause melasma (dark spots on your skin), which can worsen with sun exposure. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen with protective clothing. If you are nearsighted or wear contact lenses, you may experience vision problems or difficulty wearing contacts, so consult your eye doctor if needed.

Do not use this medication during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect pregnancy, inform your doctor right away. It is unclear if Livial passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding while using this medication is not recommended.

Storage Guidelines for Livial (Tibolone)

Store Livial tablets in their original package in a cool, dry place. Ensure the temperature stays below 25°C. Keep the tablets out of reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date printed on the blister and outer box.

For disposal, if your doctor advises you to stop taking Livial or the expiry date has passed, consult your pharmacist on how to properly dispose of any leftover medication.
