About Lamictal XR

Uses and Benefits of Lamictal XR

Lamictal XR is indicated for the treatment of certain types of seizures in people aged 13 years and older. It is used with other medications to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures and partial-onset seizures. Lamictal XR can also be used alone when transitioning from one other medication used to treat partial-onset seizures.

The safety and effectiveness of the medication in children under 13 years old have not been established. Other forms of Lamictal are available for children aged 2 to 12 years. Additionally, it is not known if the medication is safe or effective when used alone as the first treatment for seizures.

Ingredients in Lamictal XR

The active ingredient in Lamictal XR is lamotrigine. Inactive ingredients include glycerol monostearate, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer dispersion, polyethylene glycol 400, polysorbate 80, and silicon dioxide (in 25- and 50-mg tablets only).

Other inactive ingredients are titanium dioxide, triethyl citrate, carmine (in 250-mg tablets only), iron oxide black (in 50-, 250-, and 300-mg tablets only), iron oxide yellow (in 25-, 50-, and 100-mg tablets only), iron oxide red (in 100-mg tablets only), and FD&C Blue No. 2 Aluminum Lake (in 200- and 250-mg tablets only).

How to Take Lamictal XR?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Take Lamictal XR as directed by your healthcare provider. Your doctor may adjust your dose, but do not change it without consulting them.

Do not stop taking it suddenly, as this can cause serious problems, such as seizures that do not stop. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to stop taking the medication gradually.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as usual. Do not take two doses at the same time.

If you take too much of the medication, contact your healthcare provider, Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately.

It may take several weeks before you feel the full effect of the medication.

If you have epilepsy, notify your healthcare provider if your seizures worsen or if you experience new types of seizures.

Lamictal XR can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew, crush, or divide them.

If you have trouble swallowing the tablets, inform your healthcare provider, as there may be other forms of Lamictal that are easier for you to take.

If you receive the medication in a blister pack, inspect the packaging before use. Do not use the medication if the blisters are torn, broken, or missing.

Who Should Not Take Lamictal XR?

Do not take the medication if you have an allergy to lamotrigine or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Refer to the “Ingredients in Lamictal XR” section for a complete list of ingredients.
