About Jakavi
Uses and Benefits of Jakavi
Jakavi is indicated for the treatment of adults with an enlarged spleen and related symptoms caused by myelofibrosis, a rare type of blood cancer. It is also used to manage haematocrit levels (the proportion of red blood cells in the blood) in adults with polycythemia vera who cannot use or do not achieve adequate control with cytoreductive therapy.
A physician experienced in anti-cancer treatments should prescribe and monitor Jakavi.
Ingredients in Jakavi
The active ingredient in Jakavi is ruxolitinib phosphate. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, sodium starch glycolate (Type A), and povidone.
How to Take Jakavi?
Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.
Do not take more Jakavi than your doctor told you. It is typically taken twice daily. For myelofibrosis, the usual dose is 15 mg or 20 mg by mouth twice daily. For polycythemia vera, the usual dose is 10 mg by mouth twice daily. The maximum dose is 25 mg twice daily. Take the medication at the same time every day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not cut, break, dissolve, crush, or chew it.
If you require hemodialysis, take one dose of the medication after each session. Continue taking the medication as long as your doctor recommends. This is a long-term treatment, and your doctor will monitor your condition regularly to ensure the medication is effective.
Monitoring During Treatment
Before starting Jakavi, your doctor will perform blood tests to determine your starting dose. During treatment, your doctor will monitor your blood cell counts, kidney and liver function, heart rate, and blood pressure. Lipid levels in your blood may also be checked. Based on these tests, your doctor may adjust your dose or temporarily stop treatment if needed.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
If you take more than the prescribed amount, contact a healthcare provider, hospital, or Poison Control Center immediately, even if you feel fine.
Stopping Treatment
Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor. Stopping treatment for myelofibrosis may cause symptoms to return. If you have questions about using Jakavi, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Who Should Not Take Jakavi?
Do not take Jakavi if you are allergic to ruxolitinib or any of the other ingredients listed under the “Inactive Ingredients” section. Avoid taking Jakavi if you have or have had a condition called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
