About Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir

Uses and Benefits of Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir

Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children 12 years and older who weigh at least 40 kg (88 lbs).

It combines three HIV-1 medicines in one pill: Sustiva (efavirenz), Emtriva (emtricitabine), and Viread (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate).

Emtriva and Viread are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), and Sustiva is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). Viread and Emtriva are also components of Truvada.

Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir may be used alone as a complete HIV-1 regimen or with other anti-HIV-1 medicines. It is not recommended for children under 12 years or for adults over 65, as it has not been studied in these groups.

HIV-1 damages the immune system by destroying CD4+ T cells. Efavirenz/Emtricitabine/Tenofovir blocks reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV-1 needs to multiply.

It lowers the amount of virus in the blood and may increase CD4+ T cells, helping the immune system fight infections. This reduces the risk of death and serious infections linked to a weak immune system.
