About Cortisporin Otic Solution (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Hydrocortisone)
Uses and Benefits of Cortisporin Otic Solution (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Hydrocortisone)
Cortisporin Otic Solution (neomycin, polymyxin B, hydrocortisone) is indicated for treating bacterial outer ear infections, also known as swimmer’s ear.
It works by combining two antibiotics, neomycin and polymyxin, which stop bacteria from growing. The medication also contains hydrocortisone, which reduces ear swelling and discomfort.
Cortisporin Otic is effective only for bacterial ear infections. It will not treat other types of ear infections. Overuse or unnecessary use of antibiotics can reduce their effectiveness.
Ingredients in Cortisporin Otic Solution (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Hydrocortisone)
The active ingredients in Cortisporin Otic Solution are neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate, and hydrocortisone. Each mL contains neomycin sulfate equivalent to 3.5 mg neomycin base, polymyxin B sulfate equivalent to 10,000 polymyxin B units, and hydrocortisone 10 mg (1%). Inactive ingredients include cupric sulfate, glycerin, hydrochloric acid, propylene glycol, and water for injection. Sodium hydroxide may be added to adjust the pH.
How to Use Cortisporin Otic Solution (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Hydrocortisone)?
Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly. Use Cortisporin Otic Solution 3-4 times daily. Before applying, ensure the ear canal is clean and dry. This medication is for ear use only. Avoid contact with the eyes.
If possible, have someone else administer the drops to avoid touching the ear with the dropper. To reduce dizziness, warm the container slightly by holding it in your hand for a few moments. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the dropper. Shake the container well before each use.
Lie on your side with the affected ear facing up. Hold the dropper above the ear and instill the prescribed number of drops. For adults, gently pull the earlobe up and back to help the drops enter the ear canal. For children, pull the earlobe down and back.
Keep your head tilted for 5 minutes after applying the drops. Alternatively, use a cotton plug if your doctor advises. If using a cotton wick, moisten it with the prescribed solution and place it in the ear canal. Replace the wick daily.
Repeat the process for the other ear if instructed. Use Cortisporin Otic Solution regularly for best results. Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection clears up.
Do not change the prescribed dosage or frequency. Avoid using it for more than 10 days. Do not let the dropper tip touch any surface, including your ear or fingers, to prevent contamination. Always wash your hands before handling the dropper. Don’t rinse the dropper after use. Do not use it for the eyes.
Who Should Not Use Cortisporin Otic Solution (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Hydrocortisone)?
Do not use Cortisporin Otic Solution if you are allergic to neomycin, polymyxin B, hydrocortisone, or any other ingredients in the solution. Do not use this product if external auditory canal disorder is caused by a viral infection, such as herpes simplex or varicella zoster virus.
