About Bonefos

Uses and Benefits of Bonefos

Bonefos is indicated for managing high blood calcium levels caused by cancer (hypercalcemia). It also helps manage bone damage from cancer spread to bones (osteolytic bone metastases). This medication supports patients by reducing calcium levels and slowing bone destruction.

 Ingredients in Bonefos

The active ingredient in Bonefos is clodronate disodium. Inactive ingredients include calcium stearate, colloidal anhydrous silica, gelatin, iron oxide (red and yellow), lactose, talc, and titanium dioxide.

 How to Take Bonefos?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose of Bonefos for you.

For hypercalcemia due to malignancy, the usual dose is 1600 mg to 2400 mg (4 to 6 capsules) daily. The maximum daily dose is 3200 mg (8 capsules). This can be taken all at once or split into two doses.

For osteolytic bone metastasis, the starting dose is 1600 mg (4 capsules) daily. The maximum dose is 3200 mg (8 capsules).

Take Bonefos capsules on an empty stomach with a glass of plain water, at least two hours before or after eating or taking other oral medications. Swallow the capsules whole.

Stay hydrated during your treatment with Bonefos.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.

In case of an overdose, contact your doctor or a poison control center immediately.

 Who Should Not Take Bonefos?

Do not take Bonefos if you have severe kidney disease or severe stomach or bowel problems. Do not take Bonefos if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or being treated with another bisphosphonate.

Do not take Bonefos if you are allergic to bisphosphonates, clodronate disodium, or any ingredients in the formulation or container.

 Safety Precautions for Bonefos

Before you take Bonefos, tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney problems, stomach or bowel issues, or a history of allergic reactions to Bonefos, bisphosphonates, or any ingredient in the drug. Do not take the medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Let your doctor know if you are taking another bisphosphonate, have dental problems, plan dental procedures, or have mouth sores.

Bonefos may increase the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw, especially after dental procedures. Your doctor may check if you smoke, have or had gum disease or dental issues, wear poorly fitting dentures, or have anemia or blood-clotting problems. Other factors that raise the risk include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, steroid use (e.g., cortisone), underlying cancer, infection, and poor oral hygiene.

If you have these risk factors, get a dental exam before starting the medication and tell your dentist about your cancer and treatment. If your condition changes, contact your doctor. Your doctor may stop the medication until your condition improves.

Bonefos may cause unusual thigh bone fractures. Contact your doctor if you feel pain, weakness, or discomfort in your thigh, hip, or groin. It may also cause vision problems, including eye inflammation or infection. If this happens, see an eye doctor.

The effects of the medication on driving or using machines are unknown. Bonefos is only for adults and is not recommended for children.

Storage Guidelines for Bonefos

Keep Bonefos out of the reach and sight of children to ensure safety. Check the expiration date and do not use the medication past this date.
