About Actikerall

Uses and Benefits of Actikerall

Actikerall is indicated for the topical treatment of mild to moderate actinic keratosis (AK). It is specifically used on the face, forehead, and balding scalp in adults with a normal immune system.

Ingredients in Actikerall

The active ingredients in Actikerall are fluorouracil and salicylic acid. Inactive ingredients include dimethyl sulfoxide, ethanol, ethyl acetate, pyroxyline, and poly(butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate).

How to Use Actikerall?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Apply a thin layer of Actikerall once daily to actinic keratosis lesions until they are completely cleared or for up to 12 weeks. Your doctor may reduce the application frequency to three times per week if you experience skin reactions. Some improvement may appear as early as 6 weeks, but complete healing may take up to 8 weeks after stopping treatment.

Application Instructions:

  • Clean the affected area with warm water and let it dry completely.
  • If you applied Actikerall the day before, peel off the white film. Warm water may help.
  • Press down and turn the lid to open the bottle.
  • Wipe excess solution from the brush by dabbing it on the neck of the bottle.
  • Dab the solution onto the lesion and a small rim (no more than 0.5 cm) of healthy skin.
  • Treat up to 10 lesions at once, covering no more than 25 cm² of skin.
  • Let the solution dry for at least 3 minutes. Do not remove the film until the next application.
  • Do not cover the treated area with a dressing.
  • Avoid contact between the treated area and other people, pets, or objects.
  • Close the bottle tightly to prevent the solution from drying out. Do not use it if the solution forms crystals.

Important

Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, genitals, or mucous membranes. Actikerall may permanently stain clothing, fabrics, or acrylic surfaces.

Missed Dose:

If you miss a dose, continue as usual without applying a double dose.

Overdose:

In case of overdose or accidental ingestion, contact a healthcare provider, hospital, or Poison Control Center immediately, even if no symptoms are present.

Who Should Not Use Actikerall?

Do not use Actikerall if you are allergic to fluorouracil, capecitabine, salicylic acid, other salicylates, or any ingredients in Actikerall or its container. Do not use this medication if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Avoid using Actikerall if you are taking brivudine, sorivudine, or similar drugs that interfere with the elimination of fluorouracil from your body. These drugs are not available in Canada. Do not use Actikerall if you have a kidney problem, or a condition called dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency.

Avoid getting Actikerall in your eyes, mouth, nostrils, or on the genitals (mucous membranes).

Safety Precautions for Actikerall

Before you use Actikerall, tell your healthcare provider if you have reduced levels of the enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD). This enzyme helps break down fluorouracil, and high levels of it may cause stomach pain, cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth or throat soreness, unusual bleeding, bruising, or black stools. If these symptoms occur, wash Actikerall off with warm water and seek medical help immediately.

Inform your doctor if you have other skin diseases or conditions in addition to actinic keratosis (AK), as these may affect the treatment. If you have reduced sensation to touch, pain, or temperature, such as in diabetic neuropathy, your doctor will need to monitor your treatment closely.

In areas of skin with a thin epidermis, Actikerall should be applied less frequently, and your doctor should carefully monitor your progress during treatment. Always discuss any medical conditions or concerns with your healthcare provider before using Actikerall.

Storage Guidelines for Actikerall

Store Actikerall at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze the medication. Keep the bottle tightly closed to prevent the solution from drying out.

Keep the medication out of the reach and sight of children. Check the expiry date on the label or carton and do not use the medication after this date. The expiry date refers to the last day of the listed month. Actikerall is flammable, so keep it away from fire or flames.
