What is Xeloda /Capecitabine used for?

Xeloda is a medication used to treat patients with certain types of colorectal and breast cancers. It works by slowing the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body.

How should Xeloda /Capecitabine be stored?

Store at room temperature. Keep away from heat, light, moisture, children and pets.

How should I take Xeloda/Capecitabine ?

Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger or more frequent doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Within 30 minutes after a meal, take each dose with water. Doctors usually prescribe this medication for 14 days following a 7 day drug free rest period.

When should Xeloda /Capecitabine not be taken?

Do not take Xeloda with a blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin) without your doctor's advice because it can cause severe bleeding and death.

What precautions should I follow when taking Xeloda /Capecitabine ?

Before taking Xeloda, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding; are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you are currently taking a blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin); if you have liver disease or a history of liver problems; if you have kidney disease, heart or coronary artery disease; or if you are taking any other medicines including warfarain (Coumadin), leucovorin (Wellcovorin), phenytoin (Dilantin), or folic acid (found in some vitamins).

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Xeloda /Capecitabine ?

Your doctor may prescribe you Xeloda in a combination of different strength tablets. Ensure you have the correct dose by correctly identifying the tablets to prevent overdose.

When should Xeloda /Capecitabine not be taken?

Severe: Vomiting more than once within 24 hours; pain, swelling, redness, or sores in or around the mouth; fever with a temperature greater than 100.5 degrees; diarrhea at night or have more than 4 bowel movements a day; tingling, pain, swelling, numbness, or redness of the hands and or feet (hand-and-foot syndrome); nausea or loss of appetite (eating only at certain times or eating much less each day); or an allergic reaction including hives, closing of your throat, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath or swelling of your face, tongue or lips.

Common: Dizziness; tiredness; headache; dehydration; constipation; eye irritation; sleeplessness; or a rash or dry or itchy skin.
